Adventures In Food: Uruguay

{day of gnocchi}

It's time for a long overdue post on Milkshakes and Pattycakes! I've just been having such a ball travelling that I haven't had time to update the blog. But here are my fave foodie finds from Uruguay. The 29th of each month is 'gnocchi day', and restaurants and markets will all have gnocchi available. The background is that by the 29th, people who were paid monthly could only afford to make or buy gnocchi to tide them over until their next paycheck.

{parilla}

So Uruguay is a meat lover's heaven. Perhaps even more so than Argentina! We actually cooked at our hostel much more in Uruguay than in any other country, mostly because it was tricky to find vegetarian food. The parillas (grill restaurants) at the Mercado Municipal in Montevideo filled the indoor market (which has no fresh food but just parillas) with smoke. I did manage to find something to eat though...

{roast potato with blue cheese}

Yes, I could have gone for the healthier option of roasted capsicum but how could anyone resist this!
